  • Together On the Air x Unidad: Film Screening and Panel

    One Institute presents a screening of Unidad: Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos, a documentary film that tells the story of the Los Angeles organization, Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos (GLLU). Following the screening, a panel discussion featuring Director Gregorio Davila, Executive Producer and GLLU co-founder Roland Palencia, and Radio GLLU hosts Rita Gonzales, Eduardo Archuleta, and Lydia Otero. The panel discussion will be moderated by Together On the Air exhibition curator Ángel Labarthe del Solar.

    This public program is a closing event for Together On the Air, an exhibition that showcases a body of rare audio materials and stories about Radio GLLU, the first bilingual LGBTQIA+ radio program in the United States.

    The program will take place at ONE Gallery in West Hollywood on Friday March 31, 2023, on Cesar Chavez Day, as a means to honor Cesar Chavez’s contribution to queer Latinx activist history. The program will highlight the coalition work built between Chavez, United Farm Workers, and members of GLLU toward LGBTQ+ Latinx rights and liberation in 1980s and 1990s Los Angeles.

    Doors open at 6pm. Screening begins at 7pm, followed by a panel discussion.

    One Institute presents Together On the Air: LIVE on Radio, a pre-launch event celebrating Together On the Air, a hybrid exhibit that chronicles the history of Radio GLLU, the first bilingual LGBTQ+ radio program in the country. From the mid-1980s through the 1990s, Radio GLLU was hosted and run by the Los Angeles-based Gay and Lesbian Latinos Unidos (GLLU), one of the first LGBTQ+ Latinx organizations in the country.

    The pre-launch event will take place on Saturday, December 10, 2022, 4:30-7pm, at ONE Gallery, West Hollywood, 626 M Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069.

    Original Radio GLLU co-hosts Rita Gonzales and Eduardo Archuleta will reunite for a live recording of an exclusive radio session featuring special guests, including playwright & MacArthur Fellow Luis Alfaro, activist Irene Martínez, and historian & author Lydia Otero. Audience will experience the radio session in its original “Gay Day” format from the 1980s. The live recording session will start at 5:30pm.

    Together On the Air: LIVE on Radio, co-presented by dublab and One Institute, dedicated to LGBTQIA+ storytelling since 1952.

    This show was recorded in front of a live audience as part of One Institute’s latest exhibition Together On the Air, which chronicles the historic contributions of Radio GLLU, the first bilingual LGBTQIA+ and Latinx-run radio program in the United States.

    Radio GLLU co-hosts reunited on air for exclusive interviews with activists from the queer Latinx liberation movement in 1980s and 1990s Los Angeles.
